Each NFF Scholar-Athlete of the Day is selected from the list of candidates for the 2014 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by?Fidelity Investments?which also made up the list of semifinalists?for the William V. Campbell Trophy, also presented by Fidelity. The 25th Campbell Trophy?was awarded to Duke linebacker David Helton at the 57th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 9, 2014. Nominated by their school as the absolute best all-around scholar-athlete on their team, 169 candidates met the high standards needed for consideration this year. As part of its effort to highlight the best of the gridiron, the NFF?separately highlights each of these 169 candidates on its website. These outstanding individuals must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

2013 NFF Legacy Award recipient and 2014 AFCA Good Works Team member; Staff sergeant in the Texas National Guard who joined the military at age 20 in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, ultimately spending six years in the Army?s Special Forces and earning a Bronze Star for his service in the Middle East; Spends summers serving his country on missions abroad; Named 2012 Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year; Recipient of 2012 Disney Spirit Award to college football?s most inspirational figure; First winner of Armed Forces Merit Award by the FWAA; Earned Distinguished Young American Award by NFF Austin Chapter; Member of the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium Veterans Committee (appointed by UT President Williams Powers); Regular visitor to Dell Children?s Medical Center; Hosted Wounded Warriors at practice and organized team visit to Camp Mabry in Austin; Volunteered with MJ&M charity event that helped raise nearly $3 million; Helped start UT organization called Caring for Camo, which produces military care packages and host events to benefit wounded warriors; Carries the American flag during the pregame ceremonies at Longhorn home games.
